Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup milk (or almond milk for dairy-free)
½ cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for icing)
½ cup butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
⅓ cup milk (or almond milk)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for icing)
Black and orange sprinkles
Edible spider candies (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes until fully combined.
Incorporate the boiling water. The batter will be thin, which is normal.
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Prepare the chocolate icing by combining cocoa powder and softened butter in a medium bowl. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk while beating until smooth and creamy. Stir in vanilla extract.
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate, spread icing on top, then place the second layer on top.
Spread icing over the top and sides of the cake. To create the spider web design, pipe concentric circles of icing on the top and use a toothpick to drag lines from the center to the edge.
Finish with black and orange sprinkles and add edible spider candies if desired.
Notes
Ensure cakes are completely cool before icing to prevent melting. Customize decorations to match your Halloween theme.
