Ingredients
1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
Salt and pepper to taste
16 ounces ricotta cheese
1 egg
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
12 lasagna noodles
Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef or sausage over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat. Add onion and garlic, sautéing until soft. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, and basil. Simmer for about 20 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Mix the Cheese Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and parmesan cheese. Mix until well blended. Season with salt and pepper.
Boil the Noodles: Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay flat on a clean surface to prevent sticking.
Assemble the Lasagna: In a 9×13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Place four lasagna noodles on top, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, a third of the mozzarella, and a layer of meat sauce. Repeat the layering process, ending with noodles and topping with remaining mozzarella.
Bake the Lasagna: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Cover the lasagna with aluminum foil. Bake for 25 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and golden.
Let It Rest: Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Letting the lasagna rest before slicing helps it hold its shape. Use fresh herbs to elevate flavor.
